Michael Brown, President & CEO
As President and CEO, Michael has led CMLC and steered the direction of the East Village revitalization plan vision since September 2011. In his role, Michael works closely with the Board of Directors, City of Calgary and key community and business partners to realize the successful completion of key infrastructure programs for East Village, along with pursuing new opportunities to deliver value to CMLC’s sole shareholder, both within the Rivers District and beyond.
Previously he made a highly visible mark on Calgary’s cityscape as an associate VP with Matthews Southwest – the organization responsible for delivering Encana’s 58-story downtown tower, THE BOW and as vice president at Calgary Economic Development.
To deepen his connections to the Calgary community, Michael is the Chair of the Calgary Opera and serves as a member on several boards and committees such as the National Music Centre Building Committee, the Calgary Stampede Board – Strategy Committee, the Calgary Airport Authority – Business Development Committee and the Supervisory Board for reSITE - an international Community Development Festival in Prague.
Susan Veres, Senior Vice President Strategy & business Development
Susan joined CMLC as VP Marketing & Communications in 2009. Together with her team, she successfully rebranded Calgary’s East Village and transformed the neighbourhood’s image from one of the most downtrodden areas in the city to one of its most desirable and sought-after real estate addresses.
As Senior VP Strategy & Business Development, Susan plays key roles both in stewarding current CMLC projects and in evaluating and securing future opportunities that fit with the organization’s mandate and capabilities.
Gifted with foresight and big picture thinking, Susan has been integral in crafting a long-term strategic vision for the company, ensuring the organization is well positioned for future growth, and uncovering new and rewarding ways to put the CMLC team’s considerable talents as developers and placemakers to very good use.
As the corporate lead on CMLC’s Developer and Land Strategy – a program that has attracted more than $3 billion in planned investment to East Village – Susan has been rigorous in vetting and selecting precisely the right buyer for each land parcel and the right development team for each project.
She also continues to oversee corporate communications and public engagement.
Beyond her day to day role at CMLC, Susan is a member of the Board of Directors for Calgary Arts Development Association, and she recently volunteered as Chair, Marketing & Public Relations for the 45th Annual Juno Awards hosted in Calgary in 2016. Throughout her tenure with CMLC, she has loaned her expertise to a variety of industry advisory panels, brand workshops and community planning initiatives.
In her 20-plus year career, Susan has worked across multidisciplinary teams to create strong brands, grow partner investment and create meaningful public engagement. She has worked with notable brands including Coca-Cola, Triple 5 Corporation and West Edmonton Mall, Canadian Olympic Committee and International Association of Athletics Federation, Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (CARAS), and more.
Kate Thompson, Vice President, Projects (Architect, AAA, MRAIC)
Kate joined CMLC in January 2013 to lead our Construction & Development division in delivering the master plan vision for East Village and the Rivers District. Currently, she is leading development of the city’s New Central Library, overseeing the project management team while working closely with Calgary Public Library, City of Calgary, project consultants and stakeholders.
A registered member of the Alberta Architects Association (AAA) and active Member of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (MRAIC), Kate manages architectural controls for East Village, ensuring all plans for new development align with CMLC’s vision for the neighbourhood.
Kate is a member of the Dean’s Circle of Environmental Design (EVDS) at University of Calgary, where she has been a sessional instructor since 2004. In both teaching and practicing architecture, she continues to highlight the importance of a well-built urban fabric and support projects that strengthen Calgary’s urban spaces.
Kondwani Bwanali, CPA, CGA, Director, Finance & Corporate Services
Responsible for the stewardship of CMLC’s financial strategy which includes managing the Community Revitalization Levy and other revenue streams. Ko oversees and coordinates the annual budgeting process while also managing the cash flows for CMLC. He is responsible for providing strategic direction to help fulfill the Information Technology needs of the organization. Ko and his team are responsible for the development of timely and accurate financial reporting. Together with managing administration he is accountable for the organization’s Enterprise Risk Management and Human Resources functions.
Trained with Ernst and Young Chartered Accountants, his work experiences includes working in the development industry for several years with Assured Developments and Pointe of View. Ko has had experience in managing the accounting & administrative functions including the development and implementation of business processes and controls. He also worked on U.S. projects and was ultimately responsible for all the job cost analysis and financial and joint venture reporting functions for a U.S. division. Ko's positive attitude, diligence and attention to detail have proven key for CMLC.
Clare LePan, Director, Marketing & Communications
Clare is equipped with a Bachelor's Degree in Communications, Public Relations and is responsible for marketing communications within East Village. Clare brings extensive agency experience to the team.
Previously, Clare worked for a local marketing agency that specialized in providing strategic communications plans and marketing activities to land developers within Canada and the US. Clare's knowledge of the local Calgary developer audience is a critical strength, but it’s her charm and quick wit that we cherish most!
Shaney Pap, Executive Assistant To The President & CEO
Shaney Pap joined CMLC in July 2013 and is responsible for providing executive support for the President & CEO and Board of Directors of CMLC. With over twenty years of experience in the field, Shaney excels at cultivating business relationships, and is dedicated to providing the highest standard of administrative service.
Shaney is equipped with a diploma in Business Management / Accounting from Ecole Commerciale Paul-Emile Dufresne and has a wide variety of experience through work with Shaw Communications, Hockey Canada, the Jovalco Group Corporation, and Jacques Whitford Environment Limited.
Shaney is an integral part of the daily operations at CMLC and earlier this year, she completed an online Project Management course with FutureBuilder Careers. In her spare time, Shaney loves to spend time with her 3 teenage boys.
